Located at the junction of US 60 and SR 16 on the Kanawha River, Gauley Bridge is a picture postcard in real life. Situated in the mountains, this small city is an open treasure chest for history buffs.
The day we went to have lunch, we were seated right away, probably because of the time which was around 2:30 pm. I liked the atmosphere right way because of the bright colors, movie memorabilia, structural design and lighting. Our waitress was friendly and seemed experienced.
On your return trip, stop in Ansted and visit Hawk’s Nest State Park. The view is breathtaking and the hotel first class. I contend that there isn’t a more peacefully beautiful spot in the South.
Speaking of scenery, the Glen Ferris Inn allows you to take it all in while in the Gauley Bridge area (15K map). And they serve up some mighty fine food as well. The crab cakes were exceptionally good, considering West Virginia is not the state that comes to mind when thinking seafood.
For the entrees we ordered the grilled Salmon and the New York Strip steak, both of which came with vegetables and potatoes. The Salmon was excellent in my opinion and the steak was also very delicious. The vegetables were fairly plain tasting.
We finished the dinner off by splitting a cheesecake which was just right. Overall, the food was good. The menu is fairly unoriginal perhaps, but has enough diversity to probably make most people happy. The service was satisfactory and competent. The prices are reasonable I thought, with most entrees going for less than $20. I would give the Planet Hollywood restaurant six or seven stars out of ten.
