Finding the Right Red Wine for your Palate

The label red wine brings forth images of dark, strong, sweet and seductive flavors, even more so than its lighter counterpart. When considering which red wine is the right one for you and your specific level of taste it’s important to taste a variety of red wines and consider the food you eat the most. When looking at the vast array of red wine options among the most well-known and popular is sweet red wine, dry red wine and deep red wine. Within each of these categories are an immense amount of wines to choose from. Starting with sweet red wine, it lends a sweet, fruit taste and is made from fruits and other similar flavors. Fruit wines are popular because of the sweetness that works well with desserts and other light flavors. The next grouping of sweet wine includes the traditional red wines. These often include Italian red wines and French red wine, including Beaujolais. These are both sweet and popular, but can also hold their own against bolder food flavors, like popular BBQ dishes. The sweetest of the sweet wines are no doubt the ports. They are often enhanced with other bold liquors, like brandy, and are known as the after-dinner drink. Ports offer three different levels of flavor and sweetness. Vintage Ports also tend to have a slightly nutty flavor that they take on from the time spent aging in the cask. Dry red wine is the least sweet form of red wine and one of the most popular too. Dry red wine can include a large variety of wines, of those the most popular are Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. If you are looking to step outside your red wine comfort zone, look for an Australian red wine or Shiraz. These are both deep in flavor and can be paired with hearty, rustic dishes like stews, red meats and lobster. When looking for a quality red wine it’s important to take the time to find the one that’s right for you. If your tastes lie on the sweet side, then taste more of the sweet red wine varieties.
