Disaster Changed Into A Sweet Treat

Wonderful reports heading your way:  Everyone in the country can once more experience the King Cake, a crown jewel of New Orleans, within this Mardi Gras Season.

For your information, a King Cake is made from a coffee cake blended with a French pastry which is packed with history just like its flavor.  The cake is often a bakery treat formed into an oval-shape.  It is embellished with noble hues or Gold for Power, Purple for Justice and Green for Faith.  These 3 shades symbolize the jeweled crown that worships the three wise men which presented gifts to the actual Christ Child.  Concealed in the cake is usually a little plastic baby and being the “King for a day” is given to someone who uncovers it.

Some of the most popular King cakes are the ones made in New Orleans at the well-known Randazzo’s Camellia City Bakery. Inspite of the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, the shop not too long ago reopened its doors and took part in a special program with DHL to bring a taste of home to homeless New Orleanians, citizens and other people for Mardi Gras.

Proprietor of Randazzo’s, Tricia Zornes, explained” Continuing local traditions like Mardi Gras helps revitalize the New Orleans economy, improves morale and shows the world that we can rebuild and re-establish the culture that has made New Orleans special.”

To help the restoring and celebrate the reopening, shipping and delivery organization DHL developed a festive, co-branded shipping box, specially designed to open up from the top to guard the rich icing and traditional shape.

Zornes added, when pretty much everything was practically gone, the shipper’s sales agent dedicated his personal time and power in the reconstruction of the actual bakery, from the valuable baking equipment to the building itself.  As outlined by Zornes, “In addition to helping us create a new distribution process, he went beyond the call of duty in offering to help paint, or do any odd jobs that would help us get up and running quickly.”

“DHL has been committed to leveraging its resources to support disaster relief and long-term reconstruction along the Gulf Coast, and is now pleased to be able to support the private sector in rebuilding their businesses and their livelihoods,” stated Kay Hart, Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications, DHL Americas.
