Buying Wine Online – The Early Years

The Internet has seen the rise and fall of many online wine stores.

Even today there is a multitude of sites to choose from around the world.

Over the past few years there had been a general decline in online purchases, triggering many sites to investigate the potential causes for this.

A large amount of market and consumer research was undertaken to work out exactly what users wanted. A major flaw across many sites was that it was too difficult and too far to long to actually reach the purchasing stage.

Another problem was that users felt that there were too many steps involved in purchasing wine. A number of sites have now streamlined the process and ordering can be done in as little as three clicks.

Findings have also determined that customers did not want to be limited to purchasing just wine online. Customers were also looking to buy a range of alcohol whether it was beer, spirits, local or international wine or liqueurs.

Another hot topic amongst customers was the safe delivery of their wine. Many customers were not re-assured that their wine was going to be handled with care or whether their order was insured in case of accidents or breakage.

There were also some concerns raised over the availability of wine. Stock was also a problem as some cellars were having trouble keeping all wines available at all times. Some stores pooled their resources, offering to fill any inventory shortages for each other to ensure that customers will have all wines available to them.

The final concern that was aired by online patrons was that of internet security. Customers wanted to be sure that when they buy their wine online, their payment details would be secure and would not fall into the hands of a third party. Thanks to the hard work of online payment software companies, Paypal and credit card transactions are now the most popular and secure forms of online payments.

Most wine websites have taken these points on board which means that it is now easier and more secure than ever to buy wine online.
