The definition of the noun hamper is a large basket, usually with a cover, used for the packing and carrying of articles. It is primarily a British term. A hamper doesnt suffer from the contents not being able to breath, which is why they have traditionally been used for food. Not everyone goes for shop bought options, preferring to fill their own choice of basket with hand-selected items the recipient will particularly enjoy.
